The Yocum Institute is so pleased to welcome Leigh Grant to the Dance Department!
As a dancer, Ms. Grant brings 34 years of training, performance, and teaching experience to the Yocum Institute. She began lessons in her hometown of Lancaster, PA which led to the opportunity to train at Broadway Dance Center in New York City at age 10. There, Ms. Grant studied with Madame Gabriella Darvash, Cynthia Vallone, and Finis Jhung in ballet, Savion Glover in tap, and Frank Hatchett in hip-hop, while continuing her training in Lancaster. In my hometow Lancaster, she trained with the Dancer’s Workshop, and Carolyn Trythall and Viktor Yeliohin at Lancaster School of Ballet. She received numerous invitations to attend master classes and coaching sessions with Franco DeVita, and artists and/or teachers with/at the American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, and Pennsylvania Ballet.
At age 13, Ms. Grant earned her first professional booking, performing in the national Christmas tour of world renowned pianist Dino Kartsonakis.Her classical repertoire includes “Clara” in The Nutcracker with Laurel Ballet at the Fulton Opera House performing with guest artists from the Pennsylvania Ballet, and “Snowflake” in The Nutcracker with Lancaster School of Ballet, alongside the Donetsk Ballet of Ukraine. She performed soloist roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Les Sylphides, La Boutique Fantasque, and Swan Lake. Principal roles include The Dying Swan, and Kitri in Don Quixote. Ms. Grant had a modern role created for her by Kim Jureckson in 2005 for the Theater of the Seventh Sister’s Winter Dance Festival. She has performed various classical and contemporary roles with the University of Pennsylvania’s ballet troupe. She served as a soloist and ensemble lead in the Christmas show featuring The Celebration Singers, under the direction of the late Chet Zercher, and she recently performed at the Ware Center in Portals: The Gail Gray Project in December 2017 and for the South Central PaARTners Showcase in June 2017. I have also made appearances in SPEAK! At Fruition Collective.
Ms. Grant has appeared as an actor in Creative Works of Lancaster’s 24 Hour Plays, having a featured role in Sharon Mellinger’s play ‘Withdrawal’, directed by John Rohrkemper.
While pursuing her undergraduate degree, she was cast as the White Queen/Girl in a silent film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland directed by Kelly Maher.
Ms. Grant has taught theatre (acting) and dance at The Ware Center’s ArtsSmarts Camp for youth ages 4-5 and grades 6-8 in June of 2017. Throughout 2017, she was a substitute dance teacher for Popovsky Performing Arts Center and for Laurel Dance Company, teaching beginner-advanced ballet and pointe, creative movement, modern, and jazz. In earlier years, she taught as an independent contractor at the YWCA, offering beginner ballet and tap to ages 4-6 and 11-15 and advanced beginner/intermediate ballet at the The New Movement Center as an independent contractor.
Ms. Grant holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Theater from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA.
