On April 29, 2017, twelve courageous women took the stage at the Lehigh Valley production of “Listen To Your Mother,” the national storytelling series founded by blogger, Ann Imig in 2010. Two of those women were Berks County residents and Yocum Institute students, Kim Rivera and Betsy Woytovich. These two writers recently participated in the winter session of Yocum’s creative writing workshop: SAY IT OUT LOUD, run by award-winning local author, Amy Impellizzeri.
During the SAY IT OUT LOUD workshop, Impellizzeri shared her own experience as a cast member in the 2016 production of “Listen To Your Mother,” and encouraged workshop attendees to consider writing original pieces and auditioning for the show. Rivera and Woytovich accepted the challenge, and Impellizzeri agreed to offer feedback on the draft pieces prior to submission. Both women auditioned and were among the final 12 chosen to read their original pieces relating to motherhood, at a live reading performance held at Artsquest at the Steelstacks in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Says Impellizzeri: “It was enormously gratifying to see these two women take the lessons we discussed in the workshop and showcase them in their beautiful essays on motherhood. They truly did SAY IT OUT LOUD.”
Kim Rivera read a poignant piece entitled “Temporary Motherhood” and Betsy Woytovich read a beautiful piece, “My Mother’s Shoes.” A portion of the proceeds from the show went to local charity: YWCA Bethlehem. To date, the national reading series of Listen To Your Mother has raised over $100,000 for local charities across the country.
